storybook art of Ezra Jack Keats

Ezra Jack Keats (1916-1983), winner of the Caldecott Medal in 1963 for The Snowy Day, has written or illustrated more than 85 books for children. Ezra Jack Keats' children stories make use of wonderful collages. The imagery provided is reminiscent of experiences we all share in childhood - the fun of snow, a favorite pet, your neighbors. A recurring character in his stories is a young boy by the name of Peter. Keats derived the Peter character, not from himself as a child, as one might assume, but from a photograph in a magazine. Keats was impressed by the expressions of the child in the photograph. Keats' positive portrayal of African American youth makes his books a welcome addition to any children's library.
